Guide to Choosing Dog Breed for Family

If you have kids, here are some helpful tips on choosing dog breed for family.

  1. The best time to get a dog is when children are over 5 years old. Toddlers are more easily knocked down and injured. Most children under the age of 3 can't differentiate between the concepts of living animals and stuffed toys. Small children may pull the dog's tail and poke him in the eye.
  2. Many big dogs are as gentle as they are large. When children are old enough not to get knocked down, a big dog can make a great family pet. Some gentle giants are the Bernese Mountain Dog, Great Dane, Mastiff, Newfoundland, Old English Sheepdog, and Saint Bernard.
  3. Avoid toy breeds. They grow easily irritated at rough handling and prefer to be with adults.
  4. Mixed breeds make wonderful family dogs. They are known to easily adapt to new situations and usually possess sweet temperaments.
  5. Some herding dogs are good choices with children. Collies and Old English Sheepdogs have an instinctive tendency to watch over children as if they were part of their flock.
