Dog Boarding vs Pet Sitter

When your travel plans can not include your pooch, you are faced with the decision of dog boarding vs pet sitter. This is a common dilemma for dog owners who do not want to impose on a friend, family member or neighbor (who sometimes forgets).

Dog Boarding

Dog boarding kennels can vary dramatically in price and services. Depending on your particular area, they range from basic care facilities to upscale canine resorts. Most offer training and grooming. Others offer extras such as canine massage, aromatherapy, and well-dog checkups with a visiting veterinarian. Some kennels offer a variety of cost packages to accommodate different budgets.

Make sure you visit the dog boarding kennel in advance. Visit several. Inspect the facilities. Find out the daily routines and ask the owner questions.

  • Where will my dog be kept most of the time?
  • How many times will my dog get out of his/her kennel?
  • How many dogs are assigned to a staff member?
  • What happens in case of an emergency?
  • What should I bring with my dog--- food, leashes, toys, bowls, bedding?

Pet Sitter

Professional pet sitters are often a more expensive alternative to standard kennels. However, there are more benefits.

  • Dogs are happiest when they're at home, surrounded by familiar sights, sounds and smells.
  • No exposure to illnesses or parasites of other dogs in a kennel.
  • You are not inconvenienced by having to transport your pet to a kennel. (Although there are kennels that will pickup and delivery your dog.)
  • You can utilize other services provided by most professional pet-sitters; watering plants, taking in mail and newspapers. Lights can be turned on in the evening and off in the morning. Curtains can be opened and closed.
