7 Ways to Make Your Dog Stop Jumping Up on People

There are several simple techniques to make your dog stop jumping up on people. Your dog considers jumping up to be a friendly greeting. However, most people consider it to be annoying especially if you are dressed up or have your arms full.

Jumping up is more serious if you have a large dog. He may knock over and hurt a child or elderly person.

  1. Ignore him when he jumps up. Turn your back on him and walk away. Avoid eye contact. Ignore him until all four paws are on the ground.
  2. Be consistent. Your entire family and all visitors must be consistent in ignoring your dog if he jumps up.
  3. Use a positive command like "Sit" rather than a negative one like "No." Dogs can't sit and jump up at the same time. Praise him when he sits.
  4. Do not raise your voice, wave your arms, or increase his excitement in any way. He's already excited to see you. If you behave calmly, so will your dog.
  5. Plan ahead when expecting visitors. Make sure your dog is on a leash or in another room when visitors arrive.
  6. NEVER pet your dog while he is doing anything you don't want him to do. This will reinforce the bad behavior.
  7. More exercise! Although jumping up is often an activity of younger dogs, this is also the behavior of understimulated dogs. Tired dogs are calmer and well-behaved.
