9 Ways to Evaluate a Pet Boarding Kennel for Your Dog

The ideal pet boarding kennel provides a home away from home with clean and comfortable beds, frequent contact with kennel staff, and activities with other dogs. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing one:

  1. Get recommendations. Ask other dog owners in your area and your veterinarian. Some vets also board animals.
  2. Visit the kennel well in advance. If the kennel won't give you a guided tour of the facilities, don't even think about boarding your dog there.
  3. Give it the sniff test. You'll get a sense of how clean the facility is by the intensity of the odors.
  4. Look around at the condition of the kennel. Is it well maintained? Clean? Good ventilation? Are the grounds cared for?
  5. Make sure the kennel isn't overbooked. If they are crowded, but tell you they will accommodate your dog, don't consider them.
  6. Ask if the kennel has medical expertise. How do they deal with emergencies?
  7. Ask about the daily routines and care that your dog will receive. How often will your dog be exercised and groomed? How much individual attention will your dog get? How many dogs are assigned to a staff member?
  8. Be sure the kennel has a caring staff. If the staff sounds bored or laughs at your questions, they probably bring this attitude in the care of the dogs.
  9. Discuss costs. Kennels range from basic care to upscale facilities. Some offer packages depending on your budget.
